Using Recycled Carbon Fiber Nonwovens to Accelerate AAM Development
Advanced air mobility (AAM) is reshaping the future of passenger and cargo transport, prioritizing lightweight and sustainable materials to drive advancements in electric flight and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology. In this webinar, Dr. Mandy Clement and Dr. Tim Swait will present a recent collaboration between the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and James Cropper. This pioneering project focused on developing reinforced UAV wing skins that offer strength, lightweight properties and recyclability in equal measure. In the project, the emphasis was on the use of advanced manufacturing techniques, such as tailored fiber placement (TFP), to precisely reinforce critical areas of the UAV wing skin without adding unnecessary weight. James Cropper’s recycled carbon nonwovens are utilized within the project to facilitate part manufacture via TFP, providing a lightweight substrate for continuous fibers to be stitched to, thereby improving handling during production. CAMX – The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo is now welcoming submissions for this year’s Poster Session. Those who are interested in sharing their groundbreaking ideas with industry leaders —while competing for cash prizes and the chance to present in the conference program — are now able to submit abstracts up until May 30, 2025 here. Selected poster submission deadlines will be July 25.

Every year, CAMX recognizes outstanding research that will impact composites innovation. Poster sessions put the work of the next generation of researchers, engineers and industry professionals from universities and organizations around the globe on display.

Posters are displayed on-site and three entries are recognized for their research content and contributions, and poster creativity and design (learn about last year’s winners here). Presenters will gain valuable exposure and connect with top professionals in composites and advanced materials.

CAMX 2025 is taking place in Orlando, Florida from Sept. 8-11, 2025. Registration and housing are now open.

Also, don’t miss out on entering the competition for the North American trade show’s annual industry awards and technical paper/educational session participation.
